Case studies

Thousands of international students come to South West England every year to study at one of its higher education institutions and in this section you can read about the some of our current and past students and find out more about what's it's like to study in the region.

Akiko Okamoto from Japan is studying on the Foundation Degree in Visual Communication at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth.  She tells us about settling into the institute and Bournemouth, as well as her course and the opportunities it has provided.

Kyoko Nishimura"When I came to UK in 2005 I knew nobody. I remember the institute’s calm and friendly atmosphere gently welcomed me on the first day. Orientation days, regular basis tutorials and supportive attitude helped me to settle down in Bournemouth quickly. A variety of social events were organized by the institute and provided opportunities to make new friends. I met many people who came from different cultural backgrounds and they led me to see the world from the different points of view.  It is very important for my art studies and my life.

I am sure my course, FdA Visual Communication is suitable for me. It is all about solving communication problems through a variety of media.  FdA is practical and vocational. Thinking about future career in the early stage of the course was particularly good for me. Activities were really helpful to prepare myself for working in industry.

I was excited to attend some lectures that were given by well-known designers both at the institute and London, as London is the ideal place for art students. Luckily, I also had a chance to study in France for 4 month as a part of European Exchange Programme.

I am happy to study in Bournemouth. Memories and experiences from the institute are my treasure now.”
