Case studies

Thousands of international students come to South West England every year to study at one of its higher education institutions and in this section you can read about the some of our current and past students and find out more about what's it's like to study in the region.

Jan Gadja from Poland is studying on the BA International Management and German at the University of Bath.  He tells us about his studies and how he has got involved with different work and social activities at the university.

“I am currently in my second year at Bath University studying International Management and Modern Languages with German (IMML). I come from Poland, but before coming here I have lived in Germany and England. During my life so far, I have moved around frequently having to adapt to new cultures and societies rapidly. Before entering university life I went to 8 schools in 3 different countries. Some might think that such constant change in your life might bring negative effects on your personality or well-being; I however think that being able to see so much in so little time is of great benefit for me.

In order to be able to finance my maintenance expenses as well as tuition fees I have undertaken numerous jobs, one of which was and still is to this day working in the Aim Higher Scheme as a student ambassador, tutor and mentor. In this job I work with children that have difficult learning abilities one of which is a low level of English. I am currently working with three Polish students and help then acquire the necessary level of English so that they can progress successfully in their school. This is a beneficiary work for both sides as the students improve their language skills and I myself feel that I am using my abilities to help them. Jan Gadja photo

Through this job I got in contact with the International Office and have this year been working as an International Student Ambassador, organizing integration events at the beginning of the year, and a sport event at the end of this semester which turned out to be a big integration success. Hopefully in the nearby future I can continue working with the International Office and organize events of similar scale to gather international students together to socialize and interact. At the same time I and a couple of my friends are also working on setting up a Polish Society that will promote our county’s culture and traditions. Apart from my studies and work, I am also a keen traveler (that’s probably where most of my money goes towards!!) and have already traveled this year twice to Germany and once to France and have plans to do a large two month expedition to Russia after my degree. I am also a keen sports fan, especially in football and rugby and try to see as many matches and competitions as possible.

As one can see I like to be involved in a lot of things here at Uni, sometimes it can get a bit tiring and stressful putting everything together but as the saying goes ‘if not now then never’ - you have to live your life at some point, and if you’re able to plan everything accordingly it works out. Obviously with new things you always make numerous mistakes, but there are a lot more positive aspects to it like always experiencing something new, getting to know people from different sides of the world, learning about new things and most importantly - simply having fun!”
